What Should You Do If Your Parrot Escapes

Let’s say you had a parrot and you let it out of its cage so the bird could fly around and flex its wings. Next thing you know it flies out the window and doesn’t return. What are you going to do?

Well, the first thing you have to do is stay calm.

Next, you have to go out of the house and search for it immediately. Chances are the parrot is not that far away. Look up in the trees and if you see it, get a ladder, talk to it calmly and bring it down. If your ladder isn’t high enough, call for help like a neighbor or even the fire department.

If you have had no success in looking for the bird, put the bird cage by the window with some food because the parrot may soon fly back at any time. You can also spread bird food on your roof, car or the driveway so they can find their way back to you.

Now, if the steps you have taken have not produced any positive results, it is time to put up posters with the picture of the parrot around the neighborhood. These should be posted in grocery stores, schools and bulletin boards. Don’t forget the pet store, shelters and clinics as these are places that someone will usually call to report a lost bird.

Aside from the photograph, your posters should also have the parrot’s name, type, age and any special markings. You may also offer a reward that could speed up the process as well as your contact details.

Another medium you can use to reach a larger audience is by putting an ad in the newspaper. This may cost but if you really want to find the bird, then money should be no object.

Your neighbors can also help if you go house to house to tell them about the missing bird. They may even offer to help in the search and ask people they know to also keep an eye for your parrot.

The best time to go searching for your lost parrot is before sunrise and at dusk because this is the time that they go out searching for food.

Despite all your best efforts, you sometimes have to accept the fact that not all parrots that escaped will ever be found. They may have flown to another state in just a few days or have died because of the harsh weather. You will never know. Just pray and don’t lose hope.
