How To Teach A Parrot To Talk
Don’t you wish that animals could talk? Well, that will never happen but they can mimic what you are saying especially when you own a parrot. These birds are intelligent creatures and just like humans, you have to teach them what to say.
One thing you must know about parrots is that they are very vocal in the morning an in the evening so if you want to make the most of your one on one lesson with your feathered friend, schedule it around these times.
Teaching a parrot how to talk can only be achieved through repetition. So, you will have to be patient and if they get it right, offer the bird food treats as positive reinforcement because studies have shown that food is a major driving force in animal behavior. You can use either nuts or seeds. Give one at the start of each session and then another if they are doing a good job.
Parrots are easily distracted if there is noise and people around. In order to make yourself the center of attention, you have to turn off the television and the radio. If there are other people in the room, request that they leave and come back when the session is over.
You can tell that the parrot is listening if you see that it stands high on the perch with an alert body stance and you see the pupils of their changing in size rapidly. So say each word loud and clear for the bird to learn the words.
One tip when teaching parrots how to talk is by associating the word with either an action or an object. Studies have shown this technique has taught African Gray Parrots over a hundred words while other species can learn over three hundred.
But can anyone teach a parrot to talk? No, because this works better if this is done by someone who has a high pitched feminine voice. It does not mean that men can’t do it so go ahead and give it a try. Remember that each session should not exceed more than 20 minutes and after the break, you can once again continue the lesson.
For those who just got their parrot from the pet store and are just starting, make it simple at first with basic words hello, good morning or good evening while the parrots perched on the stand or on your hand.
