Stop Parrots from Biting

If you are a first time parrot owner, one of the things that you should understand very well is the parrot’s behavior. This is because this will help you adjust with its living pattern and will also help you take care of the bird properly. This will also help you treat the parrot if an illness or disease strikes it or if the parrot hurts someone.

One of the major problems parrot owners encounter is biting. It can be that the parrot bites the owner or bites other people who come near it. To be able to stop this unwanted habit, the first thing that the owner should do is to understand the reasons behind why the parrot is biting.

Experts say that when a parrot bites, it means that the owner is ignoring its wishes or desires. Along with wings that are flexed, pinning eyes, and tail feathers that are fanned, biting is a sure indication that the parrot is mad for not getting want it wants from the owner.

Why do parrots bite?

Just like breathing in humans, biting is one innate things in parrots. But when it hurts people especially the owner the parrot should be tamed to stop biting. To be able to stop the parrot’s biting, the owner should understand very well why the parrot is doing this. The following are just some of underlying reasons behind parrot’s biting:

1. The parrot is trying to gain its independence. Just like other birds, parrots especially young ones tend to be aggressive when they are testing their independence. They do this by using their beaks and test how strong they are. Since this is a normal phase all parrots must go through, owners should be ready to be bitten at times. To avoid the bird from biting too much, owners must learn to say “no” and bring them back to their cages.

2. The parrot feels that the owner is invading its territory. Parrots values their personal spaces so much just like how humans do. If the parrot feels you are invading its privacy and territory, it will tend to be in the defensive mode and be aggressive through biting. To avoid the parrot from feeling alarmed at all times, you should provide it with its own territory through a roomy cage where it can sleep, eat, and play all it wants.

3. The parrot does not trust you yet. When the parrot bites, it means you are still a stranger to it. The best way to solve this problem is to create bonding moments for your parrot so it can trust and depend on you.
