The Right Way To Care For A Parrot

Taking care of someone else is a huge responsibility regardless if is a human or an animal. What makes the parrot more challenging is the daily and weekly maintenance that you have to provide as well as your attention.

When you bring home a parrot, you cannot just leave it anywhere in the house. It has to be caged and its size depends on the size of the bird. The space should allow the parrot to move around a bit and be comfortable. So he or she doesn’t get bored, it is best to put inside a mirror, a swing or a toy.

Parrots need a balanced diet consisting of fresh fruits, grains, meat, nut and vegetables. Organic pellets, cooked eggs and peanut butter can also be given since it gives the bird the protein. You must never give the parrot any food that contains alcohol, caffeine, chocolate or salt.

The best thing about owning a parrot unlike a cat or a dog is its ability to talk. You will just have to teach this through repetition and positive reinforcement while they are young because this is almost impossible as they grow older.

Parrots also need exercise. You can let him out for a few minutes each day and make sure that the doors or windows are closed so it doesn’t fly out. You shouldn’t force the parrot to fly back in when the time is up since they will soon tire themselves out. But if things are getting way out of hand, perhaps it is time to consider wing clippings.

Humans brush their teeth while parrots need to clean their beaks. For that, it is best to bring the bird to the vet rather than having him bite your hand.

Aside from food, the parrot must be given fresh water every day. Bird droppings have to be removed on a weekly basis and it must be groomed 2 to 3 times a week. You can even give the parrot a bath by bringing it either to the sink or washtub then using specialized shampoo to keep the bird looking good.

If you are able to make this work, you will have a beautiful parrot that you will love and enjoy. This will surely be a hit also among the neighbors who may also want to get one for their home.
