Macaw parrots are considered as one of the most favorite pet parrots out there because they are colorful, flamboyant, and captivating. Originating from South and Central America and also found in the Caribbean islands, this parrot type is famous for having a totally unique personality and admirable characteristics which makes it a wonderful companion for their owners.

Other macaw parrot species include the Greenwing Macaw, Maroon Macaw, Red and Green Macaw, Red and Blue Macaw that have high intelligence and inquisition skills; the Military Macaw which has pleasant behavior and good talking skills; Red Fronted Macaw, Red Crown or Crowned Macaw that are popular for being sweet and friendly; the Hyacinthine or Hyacinth Macaw that is the largest among the parrot clan, the Hahn’s Down that are quite noisy and hungry for hungry attention; and the Severe Macaw that is so small in size which makes it less appealing for traditional parrot owners.
Understanding Macaw Parrots
Despite the superb characteristics and potentials of macaw parrots, some pet owners and veterinarians say that this is not ideal as a pet especially for those who have small children in their houses. Why? Macaw parrots may have destructive tendencies and rowdiness especially if not given proper attention. Since most of them are large birds, they can inflict injury once you or a child comes near it. Also, they can be very demanding about their cage, food, toys, and attention and will screech loudly if they don’t get what they want.
For those who are planning to have Macaw parrots as pets, they should educate and familiarize themselves with everything about this parrot species to be able to take care of them properly. If the owner can take care of this bird properly and can tolerate its unique personality, it can live from 25 to 60 years of age.
